Boycott Blue Bayou

The Issue

In a message he sent Adam Crapser in 2017, screenwriter, actor & director Justin Chon claimed reports in Vice and the New York Times were how he “came across” the tragic real life story of the deported Korean-American adoptee.

Adam Crapser had survived the trauma of abandonment and orphanage care, two failed adoptive placements, child abuse and incarceration only to be deported as an adult (without his wife and children), after the US Government discovered that neither of his adoptive families had secured his citizenship here after legally adopting him.

Having read of Crapser’s prior convictions, Chon volunteered the information that he’d been a juvenile delinquent in his younger years. He used that common ground— and both men’s fatherhood status— to appeal to Crapser, asking to learn more about him and his experience. Chon told the desperate deportee that more Americans needed to be aware of what had happened to him.

Subsequently, Justin Chon shamefully exploited Adam Crapser by basing a script on his story without securing the rights to it (nor did Chon involve or crediting Crapser in the production of the film that followed.) Chon now claims to have consulted other adoptees, as well, and is setting his sights on Cannes Film Festival. He disingenuously claims his actual intention was to somehow support the cause of deported American adoptees. However, Chon’s vile appropriation of those victims’ stories for entertainment purposes, personal profit and cinematic glory proves otherwise.

Please join in boycotting the film Blue Bayou, and demand that Chon, Entertainment One and its parent company Hasbro withdraw it from distribution and immediately rescind its submission to any and all film festivals across the globe.
