Reform the Electoral System: From First-Past-the-Post to a 21st Century Model

The Issue

Over my lifetime, I have cast my vote in several elections. Yet with every ballot, I have been confronted with an unjust system, favoring a two-party monopoly regardless of my choice. Our outdated first-past-the-post (FPTP) voting system has continuously shown its inability to accurately reflect the varied preferences of our diverse population.

The recent election results are yet another blatant demonstration of this problem. It underscored, once again, the moral imperative to modernize and rectify our electoral system. Our democracy shouldn't be framed by a system that confines us to choosing between the lesser of two evils; it should encourage the full spectrum of political representation and opinions.

In Canada, a study revealed that a switch from FPTP to proportional representation could have given a much different outcome - one more reflective of the populace's wishes (Dixon, M., BCMJ, Vol. 58, No. 10, December 2016 page(s) 555-558 Politics and Health).

Our voting system should not leave us wondering what might've been; it should make it certain what is - a fair and equal representation of our votes. Let's make our voices heard. It's time to update our electoral system and bring it into the 21st Century. Our votes must equal seats. Sign this petition to demand electoral reform today.
