Grief Education Petition: Make Grief Education a Graduation Requirement
Grief Education Petition: Make Grief Education a Graduation Requirement
The Issue
In over 500 virtual grief support groups conducted by the public non-profit MyGriefAngels.org since the start of the Covid pandemic and in online research from thousands grieving losses pre-covid, the non-profit found that the majority of group participants and survey respondents felt they were totally unprepared for the loss of their loved ones and the painful grief that followed.
The number #1 suggestion made by the majority of group participants and survey respondents was that:
"We need our schools
to do more
to prepare us
for what will be
one of the biggest challenges of our lives -
the loss of a loved one"
While our schools already provide education on subjects like sex education, financial education, and others - the need for a graduation requirement of a national course on "GRIEF and the Grieving Process" at a post-pandemic time when millions of families are dealing with the loss of loved ones is now critical.
The need has special urgency in our low income communities where majority of families lack the resources or access to grief support and mental health care professionals.
A GRIEF Education course will never take away the pain any of us or our family members will experience when facing the loss of a loved one, but as the group participants and survey respondents suggest - Grief Education will provide us with research and facts-based tools so we graduate with at the very least being knowledgeable of a part of our lives that we will ALL experience; regardless of our age, race, national origin, gender, gender identity, disability, education, income, religion, geographic location or political beliefs.
