Demand a Public Inquiry into police brutality against Bristol #KillTheBill protesters

The Issue

On 21 March 2021 Avon and Somerset Police used excessive violence including pepper spraying, attacking with dogs and beating with batons and police shields ('blading'), against young people demonstrating outside Bridewell Police Station, Bristol, against the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill.

The protestors, who were standing up for everyone's right to freedom of speech, were brutally attacked by police then many were subjected to harsh prison sentences when they tried to defend themselves. This included my daughter, who in an unprovoked attack, was pinned to the ground by 3 police officers, her hand was stamped on and she feared for her life. She is currently serving 5.5 years in prison for riot.

The escalating violence has so far led to the conviction of around 40 protestors who have been sentenced to a total of more than 110 years.

The police injured more than 100 protesters, some so severely they required hospital treatment. In contrast, the police lied about injuries their officers sustained during the protest. Police claims, widely reported on the night, that 2 officers suffered broken bones and 1 a punctured lung were later found to be false.

So far no formal action has been taken against the police for their brutal treatment of the protesters, meanwhile people's rights to protest have been eroded by the passing of the Bill into an Act and by the recent Public Order Act. Not a single officer has been exposed, questioned or called to account for their outrageous behaviour.
