Protect Our Nurses!

The Issue
Did you know that a nurse is assaulted every 25 minutes? (Source: PowerPoint Presentation from University of Michigan citing a 2022 analysis by Press Ganey.)
One NIH study states "Violence against nurses has been a pandemic." Startling statistics reveal the severity of the issue: healthcare workers are five times more likely to experience workplace violence than other workers. Nearly half of all nurses report physical violence, and 68% face verbal abuse. The mental toll is significant as well, with 85% of workers reporting anxiety and 81% experiencing burnout.
It is time for our elected federal officials to pass a bill to make assaulting or intimidating nurses and their healthcare colleagues a federal offense, similar to protections for flight crews.
Nurses show up for you. Stand up for them.
On May 5, 2025, U.S. Senators Angus King (I-ME) and Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS) and Representatives Madeleine Dean (D-PA-04) and Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA-01) introduced bipartisan legislation, The Save Healthcare Workers Act, making it a federal crime to assault a hospital staff member on the job.
This legislation is aimed at deterring and preventing violence against healthcare workers by making it easier to prosecute individuals who commit violence against hospital employees. Currently, the legislation is still in the “Introduced” stage meaning it's stuck in the Judiciary Committee chaired by Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH).
Through this on-line grassroots campaign, we are educating non-healthcare workers that our elected officials need to protect nurses.
Our goal is to advance this legislation out of the Judiciary Committee and on to the House floor----and eventually make it a federal crime to assault a hospital staff member on the job.
We invite you to help us spread the word about this! Please sign our petition and share it with your friends and colleagues!
