Save Little Marton Windmill.

Save Little Marton Windmill.
The Issue
Little Marton Windmill is owned by Blackpool Council and is the first heritage site that visitors see coming into the town off the M55 motorway. Little Marton Mill is a 19th-century English tower windmill in Marton, Blackpool, Lancashire, England. It was built in 1838 by John Hays for grinding corn, and worked until 1928. In 1937 the windmill was given by Cornelius Bagot of Blackpool to be maintained as a memorial to Allen Clarke, author of Windmill Land who died in 1935. It has been designated a Grade ll listed building by Historic England. Sadly the windmill has been left without any set aside funding or repair agenda by Blackpool Council and is now in a total state of disrepair. There are currently no sails on the windmill, the paintwork interior and exterior is in a very poor state requiring waterproofing and just recent rain water is coming into the windmill through the roof. We can not let such an iconic heritage site just go to rot and I ask that you sign and share the petition showing your support.

"I am absolutely amazed that you should have to get a petition up to save something so iconic"
"Should be preserved and maintained, I remember as a kid when we’d come to see the lights and you know you’d be almost there when you passed the windmill"
"Loosing our history day by day"
"My daughter always looked for the tower then the windmill ❤️ dear old Blackpool, my happy place"
The windmill requires urgent repairs to the roof before the onset of Winter. We can not lose such a valuable asset to the towns history and heritage.
Statement received from Cllr Mark Smith, Cabinet Member for Economy and Built Environment through the Blackpool Gazette on 2nd October 2024.
"The council has had reports of significant leaks to the roof/cap of Little Marton Mill and has commissioned a survey to look at repairs.
These emergency repairs will be a priority and will be carried out as soon as ground and weather conditions permit. It is likely the cap will need more work in the next two to three years and the survey will establish its overall condition and set out what further repairs might be needed in the future.
With an eye to the longer term future of the mill, the council has met with the friends to discuss a longer term programme of improvements including the replacement of the sails and a re-painting of the mill and a review of internal access arrangements.
This will see the council working in closer partnership with the friends and third party funders like the National Lottery Heritage Fund."
