Save the Santa Cruz Pacific Cultural Center from demolition Historic Landmark CommunityHub

The Issue

Save the Pacific Cultural Center!  This beloved space, a hub for arts, movement, and wellness, is facing demolition.  Your help is urgently needed!

The Santa Cruz City School District has plans to demolish this registered historic landmark, a vibrant community center with a capacity of nearly 300. It is a beloved space for movement classes, healing workshops, concerts, plays, lectures, and more!

The Pacific Cultural Center (PCC) has been, in many ways, the beating heart of our community. For especially the past three decades, its walls have resonated with the energy of movement, learning, and artistic expression. Countless residents have found a space for healing, growth, and connection within the PCC's welcoming embrace.

Make your voice heard! Sign a simple petition urging the Santa Cruz City School Board to reconsider. Let them know our community cherishes this historic treasure and opposes its demolition.

We have two goals:

  • Save the PCC from demolition! We urge the School Board to explore alternatives that preserve this historic gem.
  • Keep the PCC a community hub! If they can't utilize it, let them sell it back to a community group to ensure its legacy continues.

Save the Pacific Cultural Center: A Community Treasure!

We, the undersigned, urge the Santa Cruz City Schools Board of Education to reconsider your plans regarding the Pacific Cultural Center (PCC).

This historic landmark, with almost a century of fostering community spirit, stands as a vital space for healing, movement, and artistic expression.

From children's dance classes to senior yoga sessions, and community plays to local band performances, the PCC has served generations of Santa Cruz residents of all ages.

It is a vibrant and inclusive hub with a spacious hardwood floor that can accommodate nearly 300 people – a truly unique and irreplaceable gathering space in Santa Cruz.

Losing this cultural gem to a parking lot and a significantly smaller classroom with no cultural or material history would be a devastating blow.

Therefore, we implore you to explore alternative solutions. Repurposing the PCC could be a win-win, providing resources for the school district while preserving this cherished community asset.  Perhaps the space could be used for student performances, arts education programs, professional development, and other school activities while continuing to be available for community workshops, classes, concerts, dances, plays and other gatherings.

However, if repurposing proves unfeasible, we request that you abandon the idea of demolition, and we strongly urge you to put the PCC back on the market. This would allow a community group to purchase and preserve it as the community center it has been and that we  passionately believe it should continue to be. There are three such community groups waiting in line for it.

We respectfully ask you to engage in dialogue with the community to explore viable solutions.

Together, we can find a path that benefits both the school district and the community.

Sincerely,
