Allowing Chickens in Altamont NY

Allowing Chickens in Altamont NY
The Issue
This petition seeks to revise zoning regulations in Altamont NY to allow residents to have hens (not roosters).
Urban and suburban communities across the country have adopted local laws to allow residents to keep chickens. They're allowed in the town of Guilderland, NY but not yet in Altamont.
There are many benefits to backyard chickens, including:
Organic Eggs, Food Source for One's Family, Fertilizer, Pest Control, Tick Eradication, Quiet, Well-Behaved Family Pets, They're Great for Teaching Kids Responsibility, They Can Help You in The Garden, They Help Families to Live Sustainably, They Reduce Kitchen Waste, and Can Help with Community Building, among many others.
Current Zoning Regulations prohibit chickens in Altamont, but there is interest in having this changed. Multiple towns and cities across the USA have recently altered their bylaws to permit chickens as interest in sustainable living increased and with the economics of food and growing inflation. A law to permit chickens was drafted and introduced to the Village Board in 2019 but at that time, no one attended the meeting to speak in favor of the proposal so it was tabled. We would like to revisit this issue and are hoping to gather signatures in support of changing this regulation to allow residents to have chickens in Altamont.
Your signature here, and participation in upcoming board meetings will help to make this change.
Please sign to indicate your support.
The next board meeting is February 1, 2022 and it would be helpful to have your support to bring to the board.
