Stop the Jurrassic coast waste incinerator

Stop the Jurrassic coast waste incinerator
The Issue
We are asking the new Labour government to stick to it's manifesto promises of green power and a green future.
Powerfuel ltd have been given planning permission to build an incinerator on the UNESCO world heritage Jurassic coast on Portland harbour.
We do not believe there is a need for extra waste burning capacity in Dorset. The plant is being built to supply shore power to be sold to cruise ships. This will not supply a green alternative to ships burning their own fuel, burning waste creates more carbon emissions than oil.
The UK should be leading innovation in recycling and reducing waste and over time phasing out burning waste as we move towards net zero.
There are many schemes in the UK including local schemes which are now recycling previously burnt items such as fishing nets, the choice isn't simple landfill Vs incineration.
Portland and Weymouth are two of the most deprived areas in the UK which rely on tourism. Having an incinerator and hundreds of lorries full of garbage driving through the town and across the causeway will have a negative effect on the tourism industry.
Portland is also in the middle of an area of outstanding natural beauty. Chesil and Hamm beaches are both SSSI.
We are not Nimby's we accept that some waste currently needs to be burnt but the UK has enough capacity and recent reports show that some Councils are burning waste from recycling collections to ensure the plants keep burning.
