Stimulus Payment for College Students

The Issue

Although efforts during this time has been well appreciated, there are many people left behind. One group in particular are college students.
Many students provide a large amount of support for themselves but due to certain circumstances (i.e being under the age of 24, a little help on loans here and there or living with parents) they have been deemed as “dependent.” This dependency has made plenty of college students ineligible for the first distribution of stimulus relief payments. Putting just a “freeze” on student loans does not lift the burden of still living within a society where you can not afford to do anything. We have to consider all scenarios that take place. Not all of us have a support system or stability to stay afloat. Many students do not reside at home but are claimed as dependents. They are stranded near their college campuses, in homes shared with other students who also can not afford to stay afloat. Many were using work-study as a source of income. There are students who have to stay in households where their family can’t financially afford to have them. Students are also out of a job and cannot find another source of income. Students who have had their income cut in half and cannot file for unemployment. These are a few scenarios affecting thousands, if not millions, of people.
Hopefully, this petition will be a tool in implementing a way to have relief from societal barriers.
