The Issue

Help Where Is My Land get justice for Carrie Matthews, a-70-year-old woman who was unlawfully kicked off of her land so greedy lawyers could continue to build their fortune. Help us remedy decades of harm inflicted by Martinson and Beason and demand that they be held accountable for their treachery.

Carrie's descendants, the Matthews, are now working with Where Is My Land, an organization dedicated to helping Black people discover, search for, identify, and reclaim land taken from them. They are demanding the return of their 22-acre plot of land that crooked lawyers defrauded them out of. Sign this petition to demand Martinson & Beason and Huntsville, Alabama, return Carrie Matthew’s land.

22 acres of land were deeded to Carrie Matthews and her husband Pierce by Carrie’s grandparents, Ed and Nona Hayden. After Pierce died, He bequeathed all his belongings to his daughter, Marzie Matthews Patton, and named her estate executrix. His will does not mention the property nor describe real property owned. Attorney Douglas Martison II planned a sinister plot to steal Carrie Matthews’s land through nefarious means.

70-year-old Carrie Matthews was given a choice—either pay rent to Marzie Matthews Patton or be kicked off the only land she knew in adulthood. The attorneys left her with very little income or housing options.

After forcibly evicting Carrie from land that was rightfully hers, Douglas Martinson requested a private sale of the property, claiming that Marzie Patton had a co-owner deed. Rather than force the attorneys to produce a deed, Judge Fay issued the order for the sale despite lacking subject matter jurisdiction. Guess what? That joint deed NEVER existed.

“Attorneys Douglas Martison II should be disbarred for his decades-long lie that allowed him to steal Black land and profit off of its sale unapologetically,” says Kavon Ward, CEO and founder of Where Is My Land.

Martinson eventually owned the land and profited millions of dollars by leasing and selling portions of it to businesses such as CVS, Aldi, Mapco, Petco, Dollar Tree, Walgreens, Crestwood Hospital Clinic, and others. Sign today to help us rectify this wrong.

Douglas Martinson preyed on a 70-year-old woman and has gotten away with it for almost decades. His moment of reckoning has arrived. He committed fraud on the court for 22 years, lied about the nature of ownership of the property, and went on to profit from the theft. His actions forcibly removed Carrie Matthews from her land and homestead when Martinson knew that land belonged solely to her and her heirs. The land and lost profits must be transferred back to the heirs. Martinson and Beason, along with co-defendants, should be further assessed compensatory and punitive damages for their acts of perjury, filing of frivolous legal actions they knew were based on lies and fraud, and the duration of that fraud on the court. Help us remedy decades of harm inflicted by Martinson and Beason and demand that they be held accountable for their treachery.

Last month, Where Is My Land had HUGE success in Santa Monica. Our advocacy pressured the City Council to vote unanimously to support restitution for the White family and Ebony Beach Club. Help us secure another win in Huntsville!!!
