The purpose of the nondiscrimination policy is to prevent students from being treated unfairly or inhumanely. As a growing number of mistreatment and harrassment incidents are based on a student's gender identity or sexual orientation, it is necessary to extend to these students the protections that the nondiscrimination policy has already effectively extended to much of the student body.

Not having a non-discrimination policy in place that explicitly protects students based on gender identity or sexual orientation makes it impossible for students who have been harrassed for either reason to file a complaint.  By making the policy gender identity and sexual orientation inclusive, these students will have the right to equal treatment in our schools.
