The Issue

Ten years on from Brexit, there is finally significant momentum behind reforms to make election advertising more honest and transparent.

33 MPs are now backing amendments to the Representation of the People Bill that reflect our recommendations for the it. 17 of those have sponsored our amendment to stop lies in election ads.

This is a significant moment for our campaign. But it isn't enough. We need more MPs to sponsor it so the government can't ignore it.

We understand there may be as little as two weeks before these amendments are debated, and potentially voted on, at Report Stage. That means we need to act quickly to make sure the Government and MPs understand how much public support there is for these changes. It often takes some time for MPs to respond to emails.

The amendments would help to:

  • regulate misleading factual claims in election advertising, following the recommendation of the House of Lords Democracy and Digital Technologies Committee in 2020;
  • create an independent, publicly accessible database of election adverts to help prevent “dark advertising” - ads seen only by targeted voters and hidden from wider public scrutiny;
  • consult on banning the impersonation of candidates using AI or deepfake technology, while protecting parody and satire.
    Please do two things today. It should take less than a minute.

1. Write to your MP
Ask them to support and sponsor the amendments for election advertising regulation for the Representation of the People Bill.

2. Share the campaign
Please share this with friends, family and on Bluesky, X and Linkedin. We have already had support from commentators including James O’Brien, Peter Stefanovic and Marina Purkiss - and now we need to build as much public pressure as possible.

Reform Political Advertising is not-for-profit, politically neutral, and run by unpaid volunteers.

We will keep you updated as the Bill progresses, and we may need your help again in the coming weeks.

Thanks for your support.
