Stop Terrorism and Corruption in Nigeria

The Issue

The picture of the Mother and child burnt to death  represents and symbolizes the horrific stage of terrorism in Nigeria.  A stage where thousands of innocent men, women, boys, girls and babies have been killed, bombed, stabbed, drowned, kidnapped, maimed, mutililated and burnt by terrorists. Nigerians are terrorised daily for their religious beliefs, ethnicities and  social orientations; and  they are living in fear  of their lives- not knowing when and where  the next strike terroristic act  will be. Help Nigerians  to put an end terrorism in Nigeria.

On the other hand,  The New York Times, 02/21/2014 reported that  - President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria removed the governor of the country’s central bank from his post on Thursday, after the bank governor repeatedly charged that billions of dollars in oil revenue owed to the treasury was missing. (New York Times, 2014).

The New York Times also expressed the fact that  - Oil wealth has created a small but immensely wealthy elite in a country where poverty is on the rise; by some estimates, nine-tenths of the economic benefits from oil production go to 1 percent of the population. So when oil money goes missing — and Mr. Sanusi has said that as much as $50 billion could be unaccounted for, a figure since revised downward — it touches a nerve in Nigeria. (New York Times, 2014).

Not only are Nigerians dealing with terrorism on one  hand, but corruption malpractices from The  Nigerian goverment on the other hand. Uniquely, The internet and daily newspapers are saddled with   news of "missing" funds in BILLIONS of dollars($) from our national treasury .  The fact that Nigeria is so rich and yet 60.9% (112 million)  of its population are living in abject poverty is a serious concern. A big one!

Nigeria is Africa's largest oil exporter and the world's 10th largest.  Accounting for more than 2.2 million barrels a day  and $ 50.3 billion in 2011 alone according to Revenuewatch.org.

The Nigeria National Bureau of Statistics said 60.9% of Nigerians in 2010 are living in "absolute poverty" - this figure had risen from 54.7% in 2004. "Despite the fact that the Nigerian economy is growing, the proportion of Nigerians living in poverty is increasing every year. (BBC.com, Feb.13.2013).

Nigeria's population in poverty

  • 1980: 17.1 million
  • 1985: 34.7 million
  • 1992: 39.2 million
  • 1996: 67.1 million
  • 2004: 68.7 million
  • 2010: 112.47 million

However,  time and space will not allow me to elaborate on  the  massive   looting processes of our past and present Nigerian leaders, their wives, their officials, their children,  their colleagues and friends. But statistics  have shown that Nigerian leaders have stolen  up to $400 billions of dollars from Nigerians over the years.  These leaders  and their cohorts  have stolen money meant for constant electricity, good roads, good schools, jobs/ employment,  security/safety, heathcare/ good hospitals, pension, water, telephone projects and other benefits for Nigerians.

*Total population of Nigerians {UNICEF,2012} is approximately 170 million people.

* 60.9% of 170 million people is about 103 - 112 million people living in poverty.

In summary, Help Nigerians to  demand accountability, transparency and  sincerity from our  leaders.

Help us to stamp out corruption.
