Stop the witch-hunt! Bob Vylan, Kneecap, Palestine Action - unions must take a stand!

The Issue

  • A witch-hunt is currently underway targeting pro-Palestinian activists in multiple arenas.
  • From the tube driver suspended from work, to Essex Uni students  facing expulsion for sharing pro-Palestine articles, to the Filton18 held and questioned under anti-terror laws, now is the time to take a stand against the witch-hunt.
  • There is an ongoing genocide in Gaza. This has so far resulted in the deaths of over 100,000 people, the majority of whom are women or children. Those who support this mass, state terrorism - far from facing sanction - occupy the highest offices in the land.
  • The British government remains complicit in the genocidal slaughter in Gaza. Indeed, Starmer and co have mustered far far more outrage over chants led by punk bands than they have over the systematic, daily slaughter of civilians over almost two years
  • Police have announced they are investigating performances by Bob Vylan and Kneecap at Glastonbury - urged on by the Labour government and the capitalist media.
  • Palestine Action, a peaceful direct action protest group, is now being proscribed by the Labour government under anti-terror legislation - giving the group the same legal status as ISIS, Al Qaeda and neo-Nazi National Action. This is an unprecedented step - the logic of which is that protesters from the suffragettes to Greenpeace could all now be considered “terrorists”.
  • The workers’ movement has a strong tradition of fighting back against war and imperialism, and of international solidarity - opposing injustice around the world.
  • It is our duty to stand together against this grave attack on democratic rights. We are all Palestine Action! We send support and solidarity to all those facing repression. We oppose this new legislation.
  • We call for the dropping of all charges against pro-Palestinian, anti-war and climate activists. Protest is not a crime!

We call on the trade unions to take a lead in opposing this extreme repression, including by calling and mobilising a huge national demonstration against the genocide, and opposing the witch-hunt of Palestine Action and other anti-war activists.
