Include HPV Vaccine in the Universal Immunization Programme #BeatCervicalCancer

The Issue

How often do we all wish that there was a cure for cancer? A lot of us have seen our loved ones suffer. We have lost family and friends to this deadly disease.

Did you know that there is a vaccine to prevent cancer?

HPV is a group of viruses that are known to cause a sexually transmitted infection, that can sometimes progress into cervical cancer, which is the most common cancer in rural Indian women and the second-most common cancer in urban Indian women.

It is diagnosed so late that India has the highest rate of deaths from cervical cancer in the world.

The HPV vaccine is very effective but is expensive and inaccessible to most of the country. There is so much shame and stigma around sexual and reproductive health that it is often left out of public health conversations. We forget that real people, their health, and their lives are affected.

SIGN THIS PETITION to ask the Government of India to include the HPV vaccine in the Universal Immunization Program so that it is accessible and available to everyone.

Dear citizens, Health is a subject close to my heart and over the years as an elected representative, I strived to enable universal access to quality and affordable healthcare to all through a Private member Bill I introduced in the Lok Sabha. As a Member of Parliament, I raised the importance of women's health through various Parliamentary interventions - I introduced Private Member Bills on menstrual hygiene, breast cancer where I demanded for regular screenings and free treatment for the same. I also brought to the notice of the House the issue of malnutrition and anemia especially in pregnant women. I demanded the Government for food provisions that provide essential micronutrients and nutrient security for pregnant women and adolescent girls. I am pleased to learn that Her Adhikaar Foundation & Dr. Tanaya are petitioning the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to include the HPV vaccine in the universal immunisation programme. Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer amongst Indian women today. Despite there being a vaccine to help prevent it, thousands of women continue to lose their lives to it. The vaccine must be available to all, but is out of reach for most. I believe regular screening must become a priority, and awareness programs can be undertaken to overcome the stigma associated with sexual and reproductive health. I extend my support to their campaign and hope that this way, we are able to not just create awareness, but also enhance access to this vaccine to prevent cervical cancer.
