Invoke Reform and Expansion of the E.Q.U.A.L. and First Step Acts

Invoke Reform and Expansion of the E.Q.U.A.L. and First Step Acts
The Issue
I write this petition with a personal connection. I am closely associated with a number of nonviolent drug offenders. These aren't hardened criminals, but rather people who found themselves in desperate circumstances trying to provide for their families. I do not defend their actions, but I empathize with them. I believe that with proper education, their industrious 'street mentality' could be transformed into a beneficial approach to owning and operating tax-paying businesses while simultaneously becoming influential figures in their communities.
We must revisit and revise the E.Q.U.A.L. and First Step Acts' bills. These revisions should reflect the needs of the American people and the demands they're placing on our government-elected officials. Current statistics show that about 2.3 million people are incarcerated in the United States and that the country is home to nearly a quarter of the world's inmates, the vast majority of them for nonviolent offenses. (source: NAACP and Prison Policy Initiative). We need policies in place that focus on rehabilitation and education, rather than punishment, for nonviolent offenders.
I urge government officials to take this issue to Congress and speak not just for the people of my home state but on a national level. Our elected officials must be held accountable for representing the voices of their constituents. Implementing these changes could reduce the rate of recidivism, improve lives, and strengthen our communities.
It's time to take action and change the status quo. Please sign this petition and help to invoke reform and expansion of the E.Q.U.A.L and First Step Acts.
