Urgent Petition to Demand Protection and Safety for indigenous Hindus, Christians, Buddhists and other Religious Minorities in Bangladesh
Chinmoy Krishna Brahmachari, the monk-turned-human rights activist, has been taken to the #Chittagong Sessional Judge Court under false sedition charges. This is a clear attempt to silence his courageous voice advocating for #minority rights in #Bangladesh. The charges are baseless and politically motivated, targeting a leader who has stood against oppression.
We demand his immediate release and the dropping of these fabricated charges, the global agencies must act now to protect him!!
GHHF in Solidarity with The HinduACTion Urges White House to ensure safety of religious Minorities in Bangladesh, following Sheikh Hasina's Resignation
The resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has ignited a wave of violent upheaval in Bangladesh, severely impacting the nation's 15 million Hindu and other religious minorities. According to data compiled by our team on August 5th, many Hindus have been lynched, while temples and places of worship face systematic attacks.
"HinduACTion is working with the 5 million strong American Hindu community as well as with members of the Bangladeshi diaspora to provide them with updates as tragedy unfolds in Bangladesh," said Utsav Chakrabarti, Executive Director of HinduACTion. "We are working to engage the State Department and the National Security Council at the White House, to ensure the safety of vulnerable communities in Bangladesh."
It took mere weeks for the initial “anti-quota protests” in Bangladesh to devolve into targeted anti-Hindu violence. This shift underscores the volatility of the situation and the urgent need for international intervention.
"We urge the Biden administration to ensure the security of Hindus in Bangladesh during interactions with Jamaat-e-Islami proxies both in Bangladesh and the United States," Chakrabarti added.
The history of military coups in Bangladesh further exacerbates the current crisis. In 1975, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, along with her siblings, was assassinated by the military, sparking major pogroms against Hindus and other religious minorities. A similar outbreak of violence occurred in 2001, when thousands of Hindus were killed, and hundreds of Hindu women were raped following Khaleda Zia's rise to power. Zia's supporters, alongside their Jamaat-e-Islami mentors, unleashed a brutal campaign against Hindus.
On Monday, HinduACTion hosted an emergency meeting attended by over 40 representatives from various American Hindu and Bangladeshi diaspora organizations to assess and evaluate the response to the escalating crisis in Bangladesh.
The consensus was clear: immediate action is required to prevent further atrocities.
"It is imperative that the State Department ensures that radicalized Islamist students from madrassas and organizations like Jamaat-e-Islami do not exploit the current chaos to perpetrate pogroms against religious minorities or their political opponents," emphasized Chakrabarti.
HinduACTion remains committed to advocating for the protection of Hindus, Buddhists, Christians and other religious minorities in Bangladesh and calls on the international community to take decisive action to safeguard these vulnerable populations during this period of turmoil.
