Roll back alcohol sales to students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison

The Issue

Whereas:

  • Rigorous scientific research, most recently published in The Lancet, shows that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption at a population level.
  • - The University of Wisconsin-Madison has a responsibility for the health and wellbeing of its students.
  • Historically, alcohol sales are not a part of the core academic mission of a university.
  •  Alcohol use increases the risk of accidental injury.
  • - Alcohol intoxication overlaps strongly with sexual assault.
  • Young adults' brains are not fully mature to completely weigh the risks and benefits of behaviors like alcohol use.
  • Improving the fan experience at the University of Wisconsin would be more directly addressed by fielding competitive teams instead of contributing toward fan intoxication.
  • Financially benefitting from alcohol sales which causes demonstrable harm to students creates an inherent  conflict of interest for the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
  • Ongoing university-sponsored alcohol  sales to students is incompatible with the Wisconsin Idea which promotes using research for the public good, and the research is clear on the risks of alcohol use.
  •

We demand that the University of Wisconsin-Madison live up to its duty as a public institution and immediately stop its planned expansion of alcohol sales on campus, including at sporting events.

We further demand that the university develop a plan to end university sponsored alcohol sales on campus in the next 5 years.
