Support Plank: Stop Unjust Expulsion of Innocent Student in Upper Adams
The Issue
Plank is a tenth-grade student in Upper Adams. She takes honors classes and was the best high school tennis player in the county last year. The principal recommended her as a Middle School mentor and also chose her to be part of Friends for Rachel Club which encourages acts of kindness and compassion instead of school violence. This past summer she worked her first summer job as a tennis instructor for children. Everywhere she goes, she rises to the top in excellence and maturity.
Suspension
Two years ago, in eighth grade, she found a threat written in pencil which was a mix of print and cursive on her desk. She immediately reported it to her teacher, and school administrators took over the case. As of today, this tennis star and excellent student waits at home, under suspension for supposedly writing the threat on her own desk. She faces an expulsion hearing on Friday, September 6.
I (Tyler Weidler) am her pastor, and I believe that she is being slandered and falsely accused not for any wrongdoing, but for doing what is right. She did not write the threat, she did not vandalize her own desk. The Plank family is extremely popular in the district. Her mother Tricia won a seat on the school board by an enormous margin last year, and she has conducted herself well on the board. Unfortunately, there are a few small and petty-minded tyrants who are willing to slander and accuse the family of wrongdoing.
Innocent
Remember, she did the right thing. She reported the problem to her teacher. The threat was written in cursive, and she cannot read or write in cursive. It took place two years ago and she has been an exemplary student this entire time. The suspension is unjust, and a potential expulsion would be even worse.
She is innocent. As her pastor I have found her to be respectful and mature, and her parents are dedicated to one another, to their children, and to their important roles in our community. They are being falsely accused and persecuted for being lights in the world as Jesus commanded (Matt. 5:10-16). There is a special blessing for them for facing this persecution, but it is a matter of loving our neighbors and defending the innocent that all of us can participate in.
The public cannot attend her expulsion hearing on Friday September 6, but we can sign this petition to speak for her and defend her.
