We DO NOT WANT 419 Student Beds Building in the Centre of Beeston!

The Issue

Beeston Civic Society submitted a thorough objection to the planning application to build 419 student-only flats in the centre of Beeston.

We welcomed Broxtowe Borough Council's decision to refuse planning permission, and supported them at the Planning Appeal by developers, Cassidy Group Ltd.

We totally disagree with the Appeal being upheld by Planning Inspectorate, and are bitterly disappointed that the many voices of locals who know best what our town needs and doesn't need have been ignored.

We do not want this development. It is not needed, not appreciated, and is a broken promise!

1. Beeston does not need more student accommodation. It has enough already! (https://www.broxtowe.gov.uk/media/8308/iceni-report-feb-20.pdf
We believe this decision is in total disregard for the actual NEED for student beds; the inappropriate, central location for student beds, and the real NEED for affordable homes for local families, professionals, and elderly residents.

2. The site is prime location in the centre of our town, yet the design of the building is ugly: a featureless monoblock which is even a scale-back from the original proposal for 132 apartments (which was granted permission). It does not constitute an "iconic", "gateway status" building to our town - something we were promised.

3. This is not the place to build a block of student beds to be occupied part of the year only. Beeston needs affordable, quality homes for local people - whether they're young professionals, families, retirees, or elderly. We need mixed development for permanent residents.

We appeal to you, Mr Henry, as our MP, and to you, Mr Gove, Secretary of State with the power to intervene – hear our voices; listen to them.
