The proposed design of the new building at Berwick Maltings has raised deep concerns among the local community for its incongruity with the historic townscape of Berwick. This stark design threatens to disrupt Berwick's renowned and cherished skyline, and many of the town's most picturesque views.

The images in the application are horrifying. They show a garish, bland design that will dominate the historic fabric of Berwick, with little attempt to reference local architecture or mitigate the overbearing mass of the building, despite assurances to the contrary.

We believe that any new development should respect and enhance the area's heritage value, not undermine it. Therefore, we call on Berwick Maltings, NCC and the architects at MICA to rethink the proposed design and incorporate elements that will blend better with the existing historic townscape.

Let's protect our town's historical charm and its unique skyline and stand up for sensitive architectural development. Please sign this petition to urge Berwick Maltings to review and revise their proposed design before our town is irrevocably harmed.

The initial application has been passed, as of 5th August 2025, with 1,019 petition signatures at that time and 157 objections.

However, now there is a new architect and a new application, available for comment on the planning portal as of December 24th 2025. Please object to this even uglier plan, with more plate glass window visible from the most sensitive views to the south of Berwick.

Please continue to sign this petition and demonstrate the strength of feeling against this terrible misstep for Berwick.
