Mandate front-center airbags for all cars in the United States

Mandate front-center airbags for all cars in the United States
The Issue
In September 2025, I was involved in a side-impact crash while driving a Top Safety Pick vehicle. As the impact occurred, my head collided with my front passenger's, resulting in a shattered skull and a traumatic brain injury. This type of injury is preventable, yet it happened in a vehicle acclaimed for its safety standards.
Despite advancements in automotive safety, such collisions reveal significant gaps in protection for occupants. Current vehicles equipped with traditional airbags may still allow for head contact between the driver and front passenger in the event of a side impact. A study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) indicates that side-impact crashes account for approximately 25% of passenger vehicle occupant deaths. This statistic underlines the urgency to enhance safety features, and the front center airbag is a proven solution.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has recognized the benefits of front-center airbags, which deploy between the driver and front passenger’s seats, significantly reducing the risk of head injuries in side-impact crashes. General Motors, Ford, and other major manufacturers have started incorporating these airbags in new models, showcasing a critical step toward improved safety. However, this feature is not yet a mandatory requirement across all vehicles, leaving a vast number of drivers and passengers unprotected.
Mandating front-center airbags for all cars in the United States would significantly enhance occupant safety and reduce the frequency of head injuries in road accidents. By implementing this requirement, we can proactively protect lives and lessen the trauma experienced by crash survivors.
Help us advocate for safer roads by supporting this petition and urging regulatory bodies to make front-center airbags a mandatory feature in all vehicles. Your signature can help save lives and prevent tragic outcomes from preventable injuries like mine. Please sign this petition to demand action from lawmakers and automotive safety regulators.
