Create a national database for domestic abusers

Create a national database for domestic abusers
The Issue
In my journey as a victim of domestic violence (DV), I have faced endless challenges, but the most terrifying is the lack of information. Domestic abusers often blend into society, moving from one relationship to another, leaving a trail of terror and heartbreak. **I am a victim of DV**. My abuser was able to silence me through manipulation, and the fear that no one else would believe or help me. The scars left by these experiences aren't just physical; they seep into every aspect of life, undermining one's confidence and trust in the world.
One of the glaring issues in our country is that domestic abusers can evade detection, enabling a cycle of abuse to continue unchecked. A national database for domestic abusers would serve as a powerful tool to both protect potential victims and hold abusers accountable.
Reports from the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence indicate that every minute, 20 people in the United States are physically abused by an intimate partner. These staggering numbers cry out for a solution that brings justice and prevention. In states where specific databases have been implemented at local levels, studies have shown a reduction in repeat offenses and increased safety for victims.
A national database would go a step further. By registering domestic abusers, we provide law enforcement, employers, and others with crucial information that can prevent further abuse. This system should require mandatory registration after conviction, ensuring that abusers cannot simply move to a different town or state to start a new cycle of abuse. It would also provide survivors like myself with a much-needed sense of security, knowing that there is a mechanism in place to track these offenders.
Let us urge lawmakers, the Department of Justice, and relevant stakeholders to implement a national database for domestic abusers. This is not just a statistic. This is about lives—about your friends, your family, your community. Together, we can create a safer and more just society.
Sign this petition to stand with victims and demand accountability. Let us break the cycle of silence and fear. Your support could save lives.
