Big Oil doesn't want electric cars....

The Issue

EVs will help clean our air, reduce our dependence on polluting fossil fuels and create tens of thousands of new jobs.

But vested interests don't want this. These forces push back against the energy transition to discredit electric cars and renewable electricity. Every day, we see another anti-EV story in the press, amplified thousands of times on social media. Myths and disinformation are putting ordinary drivers off electric cars. Big Oil is fighting back.

Britain has fallen behind the rest of the world. In China, 1.2 million new energy vehicles were sold in September.

Labour needs to attract trillions in global investments for the UK's new energy industry. That means making EVs and charging cheaper, building proper charging infrastructure and having long-term industrial policies for global green investment. I've started the FairCharge campaign to help push this forward.

We need far-sighted government policies to make EVs accessible to everyone. The government must ensure that:

  • There are enough EV chargers across the country, easily accessed at fair prices.
  • VAT on public charging is cut from 20% to 5% - the same domestic rate as those who charge at home
  • More policy levers: halving VAT on new EVs, scrapping 2025 £590 EV road tax (VED), supporting salary sacrifice schemes on new EVs for lower taxpayers and interest-free loans on used.

Please sign my petition calling on the Government to do more to help make the switch to electric vehicles fairer and more affordable. Signing this petition will help our children and their children. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to improve the air we breathe, create cleaner, cheaper energy and break our century-long dependence on Big Oil.
