The Issue

STOP INDUSTRIAL SOLAR DEVELOPMENT IN HESPERUS

This petition opposes the permit proposal by California-based Primergy for the Hesperus Solar Development, in La Plata County, Colorado. The proposed 1,920 acre, 155-megawatt, industrial facility would erect up to 500,000 panels and be one of the largest solar developments in the state. No local energy would be provided to the community, and few if any local jobs would be likely.

If constructed, this industrial-scale facility would destroy a critical migration corridor and winter range for large herds of deer and elk, along with agricultural land, habitat for other wildlife, and natural vegetation, and historical and archaeological deposits. Other consequences identified for solar developments of this size include fire risks, water quality degradation, air and noise pollution, soil contamination, bird fatalities, and other environmental damage. This industrial complex also would have negative impact on the economic and social well-being of a longstanding agricultural community.

We, the undersigned, oppose Primergy’s proposal. We stand to protect the wildlife, natural environment, history, and character of the rural Hesperus community and its many resources from being degraded for decades by this wrongly-sited, wrongly-sized industrial solar facility.
