Standard Chartered: STOP destroying our planet, get out of Mozambique LNG!
The Issue
Standard Chartered, a British bank headquartered in London says they are “committed to becoming net zero in their own operations by 2025” but they are still financing destructive fossil fuel projects that contribute to climate change! One is Mozambique LNG, a gas project that could produce between 3.3 and 4.5 billion tonnes of carbon emissions in its lifecycle, more than the combined annual greenhouse gas emissions of all 27 EU countries !
This bank has signed a USD 500 MILLION loan agreement for this project. A real “carbon bomb” with terrible consequences for our planet. If we want to reduce global warming, we need to stop it. That’s why we ask you to raise your voice and tell Standard Chartered to get out of Mozambique LNG!
The project which is operated by TotalEnergies is based in the Afungi Peninsula of the conflict-torn northern province of Cabo Delgado and is already associated with severe human rights violations even before being built! In 2021, the project was put on hold after an insurgent attack on the neighbouring Palma Village. During the attack, almost 1200 people were estimated killed or missing. Now, TotalEnergies is trying to restart it.
The safety of local communities is compromised, and the project has already led to displacement and loss of livelihoods, feeding an already heartbreaking and ongoing humanitarian crisis. A criminal complaint was filed against TotalEnergies for involuntary manslaughter and failure to assist a person in danger during the Palma attack.
To stop this project from destroying more Mozambican livelihoods and our planet, we need to take away its funding. That’s why we demand Standard Chartered to get out of Mozambique LNG project!
Your voice matters; sign and share to make a powerful statement against the funding of destructive projects and contribute to shaping a sustainable and just future. Thank you!
