Protect Our Children: Reallocate Funding to Fight Human Trafficking in Toronto
The Issue
As a survivor of human trafficking, my life stands as a stark testament to the grim reality of this crime in Toronto—a persistent stain on society’s fabric. The average age of entry into trafficking is just 12-14 years old. That means while most children are focused on school, friendships, and dreams for the future, others are being groomed, exploited, and sold—often right in front of us.
My years of unimaginable anguish—trapped, powerless, and forgotten—are not unique. They echo the harrowing stories of countless children, young women, and vulnerable individuals who fall prey to traffickers every year. Escaping was only the beginning—survivors are left to rebuild in a world that is ill-equipped to support them, while traffickers continue to exploit new victims.
Toronto is one of Canada’s largest hubs for human trafficking, with victims being moved through hotels, transportation networks, and online platforms. Yet, the resources dedicated to fighting trafficking and protecting survivors remain critically insufficient.
Where We Must Act Now:
Trafficking thrives when there are gaps in funding, law enforcement, and survivor support. Right now:
❌ Survivors struggle with lifelong trauma and little access to specialized services.
❌ Traffickers evade justice, exploiting legal loopholes and underfunded investigations.
❌ Law enforcement lacks the tools, personnel, and training to combat this crime effectively.
We Demand Action: Reallocate Funding to Protect Youth & Stop Traffickers
We are calling on Toronto’s city officials and policymakers to reallocate resources to the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit and survivor support services by:
🔹 Expanding law enforcement capacity—more officers, better tools, and faster investigations to catch traffickers before more children are harmed.
🔹 Funding survivor-led trauma recovery programs so that those who escape aren’t left to suffer alone.
🔹 Strengthening youth prevention initiatives to stop traffickers from recruiting children as young as 12.
Bills That Need Urgent Support:
🛑 BILL S-210 – Protecting Young Persons from Exposure to Pornography Act
🛑 BILL C-270 – Stopping Internet Sexual Exploitation Act
🛑 BILL C-308 & BILL S-263 – National Strategy to Combat Human Trafficking Act
