Stop the data center development in Ashburn Village
The Issue
The residents of Ashburn Village, along with neighboring communities, are deeply concerned and are opposed to the proposed construction of a data center at the intersection of Russell Branch Parkway and Ashburn Village Boulevard. We believe that this development poses significant threats to our quality of life, local environment, and community well-being.
We strongly believe this proposed location is inappropriate and incompatible with the surrounding community. This project would place industrial-scale infrastructure in the middle of established residential neighborhoods, near schools, parks, trails, wildlife habitats, and thousands of residents who chose Ashburn Village, Ashbrook, Waltonwood, Courts & Ridges and more as their home because of its quality of life and community-oriented design.
Ashburn Village is not an isolated commercial corridor. It is one of Loudoun County’s most established residential communities, home to tens of thousands of residents, families, children, and longtime homeowners. This proposal would surround neighborhoods and schools with massive industrial buildings, continuous mechanical noise, electrical infrastructure, increased truck traffic, security lighting, and long-term environmental impacts.
One of the biggest concerns residents have is the noise. Data centers operate 24 hours a day and rely on extensive cooling systems, generators, transformers, and mechanical equipment that create continuous background noise. Even when noise levels technically meet regulations, the constant hum can dramatically impact nearby homes, outdoor recreation, schools, and overall quality of life. Residents should not have to live, sleep, study, or enjoy their backyards next to industrial-scale operations.
Another major concern is the impact on property values. Families invest heavily in homes within our area because of the community amenities, walkability, schools, trails, lakes, and residential atmosphere. Many homeowners did not purchase homes expecting to live near large-scale data center campuses and electrical substations. Numerous studies and growing market concerns across Northern Virginia indicate that proximity to industrial data center infrastructure can negatively affect buyer perception, marketability, and long-term property values. Even the perception of noise, visual impacts, transmission infrastructure, and future expansion can discourage potential buyers.
This proposal also raises serious concerns regarding:
- Increased strain on Loudoun County’s already stressed power infrastructure
- Potential future transmission lines and utility expansion
- Environmental and wildlife disruption
- Loss of remaining undeveloped land that could serve more community-oriented purposes
- Traffic and construction impacts lasting years
