we, the undersigned, hereby petitioning for the recognition of Somaliland as an independent state.

Somaliland has a rich History that dates back centuries. We were proud and independent country that gained independence on 26 June 1960 when it gained independence from the United Kingdom as the State of Somaliland. The State of Somaliland existed as an independent nation  before it got occupied by anarchy Somalia (formerly Somalia Italiana)

However, our journey to re-store our sovereignty has been a difficult one.  We have faced many challenges along the way, including a brutal genocide and civillian campaign to evict Somalia from Somaliland. During this period, the dictator Siyad Barre regime engaged in a brutal genocide against the Isaaq population which were the majority of the population, using the most advance and powerful military in east Africa at the time to destroy our people and cities. The scale of the crime committed during this period was investigated by the UN Genocide office who concluded a genocide was preplanned, conceived and perpetrated by Somalia.

Somaliland restored its sovereignty in 1991, following the genocide. The people embarked on rebuilding their country holding community led peace and reconciliation processes once Somalia was ousted. Since then, it has maintained peace and stability in the region, forging its own democratic institutions and constitution and holding free and fair multi-party elections. It has also achieved significant economic development, without any international assistance. Despite these achievements Somaliland' de jure status remains unrecognized by the international community. This lack of recognition has left Somaliland marginalized and unable to access international funding, trade and diplomatic relations.

Under international law Somaliland's independence and sovereignty and territorial integrity must be protected and acknowledged as the montivideo convention protects it as such just, like those countries who got their independence on the same day, in particular Madagascar who got it on the same day June 26 1960. We also believe that recognizing Somaliland would promote stability, democracy and economic development in the Horn of Africa region.

Today, Somaliland stands as a shining example of democracy and stability in the Horn of Africa. Somaliland conducted nine (9) free and fair elections, using the most sophisticated technology (Biometric) and  built strong democratic institutions that serve the needs of the people.  Despite all the  successes, Somaliland remains unrecognized, this is a great injustice and human rights violation, its time for world to renew our independent and our rights to self-determination.

We urge the international community to recognize the independent state of Somaliland and to support its efforts towards peace, stability and prosperity.
