If you do not stand for something you will, indeed, fall for anything.

Organic Valley is a power player in the world of organic dairy products. As such, they should take the responsibility that comes with having such influence as a privilege and fight to uphold the integrity of the USDA organic standards, not lobby to lower them.

The specifics about carrageenan:

“Degraded carrageenan,” which is present in all food-grade carrageenan, is classified as a “possible human carcinogen” by the International Agency for Research on Cancer of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Academy of Science in United States.

Organic Valley doesn't just have carrageenan in their products, they successfully pushed to have it approved by the National Organic Standards Board.

Organic Valley had sent a representative to publicly lobby the board to approve carrageenan, citing Organic Valley’s use of the material in soymilk, whipping cream and chocolate milk. In addition, NOSB members reported direct contact from Organic Valley’s CEO, who had called them individually to lobby for their vote. And Organic Valley submitted written comments in advance of the meeting advocating that the board vote for the synthetic material.

The farmers of Organic Valley are top notch, in my opinion. I have visited some of their farms and find the majority of their practices to be great. Overall, their products are wonderful. Hopefully they will be able to see the error of their ways in regards to this carrageenan debacle and understand that we, as consumers, expect the integrity of the word ORGANIC to remain in tact, and they need to as well.
