Save the Presidio Trust — Protect San Francisco’s Landmark National Park

The Issue

The Presidio is under attack.

More than just a park, the Presidio is a cherished public space that is home to thousands of hard-working San Franciscans. Spanning 1,500 acres at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Presidio is a historic landmark and a destination that welcomes millions of visitors annually, supporting vibrant and diverse local businesses. It offers breathtaking views of the Bay, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Alcatraz, as well as opportunities to enjoy golf courses, museums, art galleries, restaurants, event spaces, and 24 miles of hiking and biking trails. The Presidio is one of the country’s most biologically diverse parks, rich with history as a former military post, becoming a national park site in 1994.

The Presidio is managed by the Presidio Trust, an independent federal agency. Working alongside the National Park Service and the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy to ensure the park thrives, the Trust sustains the Presidio without federal funding, generating revenue by leasing its historic buildings and visitor amenities.

Today, this national treasure is threatened by a reckless executive order from the Musk / Trump administration that seeks to dismantle the Trust’s operations, putting its future of the Presidio at risk. We must act now to stop this politically motivated assault on the Presidio.

Despite its success, Trump’s executive order seeks to strip the Presidio Trust of its core functions, calling it “unnecessary” and lumping it into a broader attack on federal agencies under the guise of “reducing bureaucracy.” The reality is that the Trust is self-sufficient, has received zero taxpayer funding since 2013, and operates with a financial surplus. The Presidio represents the best of what can be accomplished when the public and private sectors work together to preserve public spaces accessible to all members of the community. In simplest terms, the Presidio Trust just works.

If the executive order is enforced, it will disrupt park operations, threaten community programs, undermine local businesses, and erode the Presidio's long-term stewardship for future generations of San Franciscans.

As the official Democratic Club of San Francisco’s District 2—the supervisorial district in which the Presidio resides—we are calling on our neighbors, fellow San Franciscans, those who have spent time in the Presidio, and anyone who values the protection of our national parks to sign this petition in support of the Presidio Trust. The Presidio belongs to all people, not just an out-of-touch billionaire class with ulterior motives, and the Presidio Trust ensures this treasured place remains a public asset, free from political interference. This executive order is a targeted attack on San Francisco, driven by hostility toward our city’s leadership rather than any actual policy rationale.

If we don’t act, this executive order will jeopardize the Presidio’s future, threaten local businesses and cultural programs, and weaken environmental conservation efforts. Worse, it could set a dangerous precedent that would allow the executive branch to unilaterally dismantle other congressionally established agencies, undermining the stability of public institutions nationwide.

We must work together to protect the Presidio and defend it against politically motivated attacks. Please sign this petition to demonstrate your support for preserving the Presidio Trust.

We kindly ask you share this petition with your friends, neighbors, and colleagues so that together, we can stop this attack on a treasured national landmark.
