The Issue

Did you know that Van Dorn Metro Station in Alexandria, Virginia, is named in honor of General Earl Van Dorn, a Confederate General during the Civil War?

The Van Dorn Metro Station, named after Confederate General Earl Van Dorn, reminds us of a painful period in our nation’s history.  General Van Dorn played a prominent role in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, a time marked by division, inequality, and strife.  His association with this station sends a message inconsistent with the ideals of unity, inclusivity, and progress we uphold in our modern society.

I urge those of authority to engage with community members, historians, and relevant stakeholders to ensure the renaming process is transparent and inclusive.  By involving the community, we can collectively choose a name representing our progress and the unity we seek.

In signing this petition, I hope you all can stand with me to advocate for change, honor the diversity that defines our beautiful city, and ensure that our community’s symbols reflect the society we aim to be.

Thank you,

Taylor Brigman
