More than 100 Google A.I. employees have asked company leadership to draw clear “red lines” in any Pentagon contract — including prohibiting the use of Gemini for mass surveillance of Americans or autonomous weapons without human oversight.

Nearly 50 OpenAI employees and 175 Google employees also signed a public letter urging A.I. companies to resist pressure to loosen those protections.

Jeff Dean, Google DeepMind’s chief scientist, has publicly opposed government mass surveillance, warning it could violate constitutional protections and chill free expression.

This is not about opposing national security. It’s about setting responsible boundaries for powerful new technology.

We call on Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Google DeepMind leadership, and the Alphabet Board of Directors to formally adopt binding safeguards that prohibit mass surveillance of civilians and fully autonomous weapons use of Gemini or other Google A.I. systems.

Workers are asking to be proud of the technology they build.
