Tackle dog fouling in Brighton & Hove

Tackle dog fouling in Brighton & Hove
The Issue
Living on a street covered in dog poo is not just unpleasant. It's a persistent and dangerous problem that affects us all in Brighton & Hove. Every time we step outside our homes we're faced with the unsightly and smelly results of irresponsible dog ownership. But this isn't just about aesthetics. It's about health, safety, and respecting our shared spaces.
Dog waste harbours parasites and bacteria such as roundworms and E. coli that can lead to severe illnesses and even blindness, particularly in children. These risks are present throughout our community, from Hanover and Queen's Park to Hove and beyond. Despite laws requiring dog waste to be picked up, compliance remains low, leaving everyone else to suffer the consequences.
This problem isn't confined to one street. It's pervasive across our city, tarnishing the beauty of our parks and pavements. It's a public health hazard that needs urgent attention.
We're calling on Brighton & Hove City Council to act:
A citywide public awareness campaign highlighting the serious health risks of dog fouling and owners' legal responsibilities
Increased enforcement through patrols and community officers to ensure compliance and issue on-the-spot fines
More visible signage at hotspots clearly stating that dog fouling is illegal and the fines involved
More dog waste bins in busy areas, including around the Pepperpot and Elm Grove, emptied more regularly so they're never overflowing
Free poo bag dispensers at key locations to make it as easy as possible for owners to do the right thing
Raising awareness that all public bins can be used for dog waste, not just dedicated dog waste bins
How brilliant would it be if Brighton became the first city in the UK to be genuinely free of dog mess? Let's work together to make our streets cleaner, healthier and a more pleasant place for everyone — families, children, elderly residents and visitors alike.
Please sign and share this petition to demand action on dog fouling in Brighton & Hove. Let's keep Brighton beautiful.
